SINOPSIS

ACT IÎn timpul unei licitații desfășurată la Opera din Paris, un bătrân, Raoul, viconte de Chagny, se arată interesat de o cutie muzicală ciudată, care pare să-i amintească de ceva. Sunt prezentate și rămășițele unui magnific candelabru. Acesta este momentul în care se produce un salt în timp și acțiunea se mută în anii tinereții lui Raoul, atunci când superbul candelabru isca admirația tuturor în sala Operei. Se repetă un nou spectacol, Hannibal. Are loc un incident șocant: un decor cade, speriind-o îngrozitor pe diva Carlotta. Aceasta se retrage, furioasă, lăsând producția fără primadonă. Toată lumea este convinsă că acest nou accident, dintrun șir întreg, este tot opera „Fantomei“. Meg, fiica maestrei de balet a Operei, Madame Giry, o recomandă ca înlocuitoare a Carlottei pe prietena și colega ei dansatoare, Christine Daaé. Christine a luat lecții de canto, dar nu este în măsură (sau nu dorește) să spună de la cine. Managerii Operei îi acordă o audiție.

Are loc spectacolul, iar din loja direcției, tânărul Raoul, sponsorul Operei, își manifestă entuziasmul față de talentul noii interprete, Christine. Meg își întreabă prietena cine este misteriosul ei maestru de canto, însă tot ce îi poate răspunde Christine este că acesta este „îngerul muzicii“, despre care tatăl ei îi spusese că o va proteja după moartea lui.

Christine rămâne singură în cabină și se uită în oglindă: un chip apare în spatele oglinzii. Este Fantoma care o trage pe fată în întunericul de dincolo de oglindă și, când Raoul se întoarce, camera este goală. Christine este condusă de Fantomă sub Operă, traversează un lac și ajung în adăpostul lui subteran. Fantoma îi spune că este compozitor, iar ea i-a fost muză. Christine cade în transă, trezindu‑se a doua zi dimineață în sunetul cutiei muzicale. Mistuită de curiozitate, Christine reușește să smulgă masca de pe chipul Fantomei. Furia lui se transformăîn auto‑compătimire, iar Christine se simte puternic atrasă de el. Fantoma este deacord să o ducă înapoi.

Toți cei din Operă sunt agitați, pentru că au fost amenințați de vocea înfricoșătoare a Fantomei cu „un dezastru dincolo de orice imaginație“, dacă nu îi vor respecta dorința: diva Carlotta să fie înlocuită de Christine în noua reprezentație: Il Muto. Cum Christine primește doar un rol mut în acest spectacol, Fantoma se răzbună: o face pe Carlotta să emită doar niște orăcăieli de broască. Mai mult, este aruncat în scenă cadavrul mașinistului Buquet.

În busculada care urmează, Christine fuge cu Raoul pe acoperișului Operei. Ei se hotărăsc să plece împreună în acea noapte. Fantoma îi aude și jură răzbunare.Actul întâi se încheie fulminant, cu prăbușirea candelabrului.

Actul IIÎntreaga companie de operă sărbătorește printr-un bal mascat Anul Nou. Fantoma a dispărut. Raoul și Christine s-au logodit în secret. În toiul petrecerii, apare un ins ciudat: Fantoma s-a întors. El îi dă directorului André partitura noii sale opere, Don Juan Triumfă, poruncind să fie pusă în scenă.

În culise, Raoul află de la Madame Giry că Fantoma este de fapt un ciudat, fugit dintr-un bâlci, un individ diform cu o minte sclipitoare, care trăiește undeva în subsolul Operei.Raoul pune la punct un plan de a captura Fantoma, folosindu-i propria operă ca momeală: dacă Christine va cânta rolul principal, Fantoma cu siguranță va fiacolo. Cu toate ușile închise și păzite, îi va fi imposibil să fugă. Christine acceptă cu greu să facă parte din acest plan. Încep repetițiile cu greutăți imense din cauzadificultății partiturii foarte avangardiste.

Christine vizitează mormântul tatălui ei. Știe că dacă se va putea depărta de imaginea lui, va ieși și de sub influența Fantomei. Fantoma apare în cimitir.Puterea sa hipnotică este însă ruptă atunci când vine Raoul. Înfuriat, Fantoma ledeclară amândurora război.

Începe spectacolul Don Juan Triumfă. În scena finală a operei, Christine vede că Fantoma a luat locul lui Piangi, în rolul lui Don Juan. Îi rupe masca de pefață. Fantoma scapă, trăgând-o pe Christine după el. Madame Giry îl conduce pe Raoul în adăpostul Fantomei. Îi urmează o mulțime furioasă. În ascunzătoarea subterană, Christine înfruntă Fantoma spunându-i că adevărata sa desfigurare nu este cea fizică, ci cea din sufletul său. Apare Raoul și Fantoma îl prinde. Fantoma îi cere Christinei să aleagă: să rămânăcu el pentru totdeauna, sau să-l vadă pe Raoul ucis. În final, Fantoma cedează și le ordonă amândurora să plece.

Mulțimea se apropie de adăpost. Meg este cea care pășește înăuntru. Tot ce mai găsește acolo este o mască…

SYNOPSIS

ACT IAt an auction taking place at the Paris Opera an old man, Raoul, Viscount of Chagny shows interest in a bizarre musical box which seems to remind him of something. The remains of a splendid chandelier are also presented. This is the moment when a leap in time occurs and the action moves to Raoul’s youth, when the famous chandelier of the opera house in Paris used to be the object of everyone’s admiration.

The rehearsal of a new performance, Hannibal, is taking place on the opera stage. A shocking incident occurs: a backdrop falls suddenly, scaring to death the diva La Carlotta who, frightened and furious leaves the stage, and the performance is left without the soprano. Those present are convinced that the new incident, one more in a long row of incidents, was the making of the Phantom. Meg, Madam Giry, the ballet instructor’s daughter, suggests that her friend, Christine Daaé, should replace La Carlotta. Christine has taken singing lessons, but she cannot or doesnot want to disclose the name of her professor. The managers of the opera agree to grant her an audition.

The performance is on. From the manager’s box, young Raoul, the sponsor of the Opera, shows his enthusiasm in the talent of the new diva, Christine. Meg insists on learning the name of Christine’s music professor but the girl is only able to answer that he is the “angel of music” and her father had told her this angel would protect her when he would pass away. The unidentified professor is the Phantom himself.

ACT IIThe whole Opera company celebrates the New Year’s Eve at a masked ball. The Phantom has disappeared. Raoul and Christine are secretly engaged to be married. Just when the ball was at its hight, a strange individual appears. The Phantom is back. He hands the director André the score of his new opera, Don Juan Triumphant, demanding that it should be staged immediately.

In the backstage Raoul learns from Madam Giry that the Phantom is, in fact, a strange being, a runaway from a fair, a deformed man endowed with a brilliant mind, who lives in the basement of the Opera. Raoul devises a plan to capture the Phantom, by using his own Opera as bait: if Christine sang the main part, the Phantom would definitely be there. Once the entrances were closed and guarded, it would be impossible for the Phantom to escape. Finally, Christine agrees to be part of the scheme. The rehearsals begin, great difficulties marking them because of the intricate score.

Christine is visiting her father’s tomb. She is aware that if she could get detached from his memory, she would escape from the Phantom’s influence. ThePhantom makes his appearance in the cemetery. His hypnotic power is broken when Raoul appears. Much infuriated, the Phantom declares war on both. The show Don Juan Triumphant begins. In the final scene of the show, Christine sees that the Phantom has replaced Piangi as Don Juan. She tears the mask off his face, but the Phantom takes his flight, dragging Christine with him. Madam Giry takes Raoul to the Phantom’s place in the basement of the Opera. A furious mob follows them. In the underground shelter Christine confronts the Phantom: the real disfigurement is not physical; it lies deep in his soul. Raoul catches up with them in the basement, but the Phantom immobilises him. The Phantom asks Christine to choose: either stay with him forever or watch Raoul being killed. The mob are closer and closer. The Phantom gives in and orders the two to go away. Meg is the one who enters the hideout, but all she finds is a mask …
